REVIEW: "(HG) take you places other bands can only dream of..."

A review from earlier this year about our latest EP 'Talk For England':

"It’s a good time to be a music fan.

There are still some cracking bands out there, and they’re making some fabulous music. One such band is York-based Hungry Ghosts, whose third EP 'Talk For England' is now available in full via their MySpace page.

Why should you be interested?

Well, firstly the band have been around since 2007 and played support slots with the likes of Supergrass, The Futureheads and Shed Seven - not to mention the main stage at the Big In Falkirk Festival and the BBC Introducing Stage at both Reading and Leeds Festival - these lads know their way around the block. If that’s not enough for you, then the fact that they prove themselves adept with both faster tracks like the blistering opener 'Archaeology', for example, and the ska-tinged punk of second track 'Doctor’s Orders' followed by the lighters-in-air slow-burnering tunes like the soulful 'If I Said' and the bittersweet 'Edgeways'. These tracks should be enough to melt even the most icy of souls.
In the space of five short songs they give us sweeping guitars and soaring vocals that grip you by the heartstrings and take you to places other bands can only dream of. Think of a jam session between the Stereophonics and Bloc Party, or maybe between The Cure and Feeder - then, you’d be half way there - but there’s more to these Ghosts than their influences, oh yes, much, much more than that. Like we said, it’s a good time to be a music fan."

This Friday...

...Our stage time is 8:35pm. In case you were wondering. So now you know. Bye.

Studio, gigs and the more!

So last weekend we were in London recording our next batch of singles, and are in the process of putting the finishing touches to them off ready for release in early 2011. We have no dates as yet, but hopefully we won't leave you waiting too long. We also did a gig in Hoxton's 'Underbelly' on Tuesday which felt like we only played for about 5 mins! But I think we were just so thrilled to be out of the studio for a while!

This Friday we are back in York at Fibbers, supporting Fenech Soler (off of 'Stop and Stare' and 'Lies' fame). Come check us out in the 'new' Fibbers since Tokyo Industries have taken the place over.

It is also my birthday weekend so come help me prop up the bar with a few Jagerbombs and tequilas! :)

We are still alive!

Hi guys.

So it's been over a month since we've last updated the site but, you know, we have been busy. Although we haven't really been 'on the scene' for a few weeks, we have been in the rehearsal studio writing some new material and planning our next studio venture! So just calm down the lot of you OK??!! Just CALM. DOWN.

We will be playing live sometime around October so keep your eyes open.

Without blinking.

As we look forward to the day Youtube, Twitter & Facebook combine to form "YouTwitFace"...

...we will update you with our news in as many individual ways possible!
Last Wednesday saw HG do a very special acoustic session in Kennedy's in front of friends, family and new fans who seemed to walk through the door heading towards the bar, stop and turn to watch us before realising they still hadn't bought a drink! Those vital moments, having the power to turn heads and capture their hearts is something quite warming. Even for us, it was one of the nicest gigs we've done in a while, playing completely stripped down versions of our songs with acoustic guitars and african drums.

But we can't hold on to these serene moments forever thus, on the 3rd July we have invited our good friends in the form of Alvin Purple and Up (Minus IQ...er, Minus Charlie!) to support us at Fibbers in York to increase the volume for a lip-smackingly good show.

You can buy tickets from Hungry Ghosts and MOR Music York.
Cheers

Don't become our Auntie Social!

If you've recently seen HG play and wondered where you can find out more info about the band, follow the links at the top of the page to be re-directed. There are a two Facebook pages - an Official fan page and also an Official group which means you can be updated with details and forthcoming events much quicker and easier. But the great thing is, Facebook gives you the opportunity to interact with other fans - you can post discussions, fan photos from shows and post wall comments which will be picked up by Hungry Ghosts themselves!

HG also have a Myspace where you can listen to their music with links to purchase their newest CD from the webshop.
If you much prefer to own songs in mp3 format, you can head over to iTunes where all 3 EPs are available to download - 'Snap Shut', 'Spider Season' and 'Talk For England' (which features the brand new version of Archaeology)!

For those of you on Spotify, why not slip a few Hungry Ghosts tracks into a playlist? If you're hosting a house party with some friends, it's a good way of showing them your favourite HG songs. Then maybe next time HG are playing in your area, you can invite some more friends along with you to see them live!

For all you addicted Tweeters, you can also interact with the band via Twitter! Every now and then you may find exclusive pictures that they Tweet from inside the practice room or backstage at a show. If you get in a photo with the band, they will put it up for all to see. So get meeting so they can get Tweeting!

He's Alive!!!

After what seems much longer than 3 weeks, James has now touched down in England after his extended trip to Kenya due to the ash cloud that grounded so many people. AND he wasn't eaten by lions so now we have a complete band again.

So...we thought why not throw in a last minute gig for a bit of fun?! This Friday night we will be playing down at Stone Roses Bar in York. It won't even cost you a penny as it's free. It will start 8.30/9pm.

There are a couple of other gig dates added too so check them out -->

Meanwhile, brush up on your 'woaahhs' and your 'deep downs' ready for Friday. Head over to the Myspace or Spotify for free streaming of our music!

See you soon

Here's one we made earlier...

Good morning!

Now that my lungs and orifi (plural of orifis, possibly) have been drained of talcum powder, I can now happily direct you to our latest bit of footage - 'The Making of Archaeology'.

We have been filming our first actual video in the studio, complete with Blue Peter-style 'smoke' machines - if nothing else, we left the studio smelling lovely. Over 16 hours of recording went into getting different takes and the right shots to create the scenes we wanted, of course, with thanks to Shanno, Andy and Martin (and Tom the Handyman!) and now it has to be sent away for a few weeks to be edited down to the 4 minute song that it is! Best get the kettle on...

If you haven't yet seen 'The Making of...' hover over the videos at the bottom of the page and watch us in full talc-action.

Goodbye.

TREAT YOUR EARS THIS VALENTINE'S DAY....

Our brand new installment to the HG catalogue will be released on Friday 12th Feb at a special FREE show at 'Stereo' - formerly 'The Speakeasy' - in York!!

We will be selling actual physical copies of the new 5-track E.P. 'Talk For England' on the night, and they will be available through iTunes (date tbc) for download.

You may find appropriate messages in these lyrics that bring you and your loved ones closer together in the run up to Cupid's day - whether it's getting 'deep down' with Archaeology, or maybe getting out the 'boots and leather' with Bogeyman, or maybe 'If I said put your head in a fan-assisted oven' is what you really need to get off your chest this Valentine's. There's definitely a little something for everyone :)

As we get closer to the release date we will be putting up the new songs for you to have a listen to on our Myspace page so keep looking out for these....the Myspace page will also look a little bit fresher as well!

Nothing like a spring clean to brush away the cobwebs..... (!)
